Define Success – Part 1

Define Success – Part 1

In my search for success I had become confused. I was stressed from information overload. I felt as though I would forever be stuck in the endless cycle of a rat race that I hated so much.

I asked myself some important questions.
What is success and how do I define it?
Can I really become successful?
What does it all mean to me?

So what is success and why are there so many different opinions on it‘s meaning? For the most part these definitions are not conflicting as much as they are just simply written from different perspectives. Each person is looking at the same set of universal principles from different points of view.

That’s why it’s so important that we define success for ourselves. This way it becomes personal for us. In order to define it we need to understand it. So let’s take a look at the foundation in which we try to put meaning to the word success.

The first principle for defining success for yourself is to understand the law of successful goal setting.

We often attach the idea of success to a status symbol. When we think of someone as being a success we often think of them having a big bank account, a big house, or something of that nature. Unless they’re born wealthy, they have for the most part, simply reached the goals they set out to accomplish.

Suppose we were carpenters and we wanted to build a table.
We’d draw up blueprints and make a list of materials and whatever tools we needed. Then we would start taking measurements, cut the wood (if that’s the materials we’re using), then assemble all the pieces together to reach our goal.

Let’s break it down. First we would decide what our goal is then map out the steps to reach it. Finally we would take the actions necessary unto completion. If we did everything right then we’d have a table however, if we neglected any part of the procedure then we wouldn’t.

So our goal becomes our blueprint, which is a pictured diagram of what we want to build. Mapping out the steps is our plan by which every action is dictated. When the actions are fully completed we have reached our goal.

We may have success in whatever we do but there is a cost. In building a table there is time and materials that are involved in the process.

So we need to ask ourselves some sobering questions. What do we want accomplish? What are the steps that are going to take us there? Are we really willing to pay the price to reach our goals?
